Abstract

This study was aimed at analyzing, from the content validity perspective, the most popular self-report questionnaires, scales and inventories for assessing clinical depression in adults in Spain. To do this, electronic searches were conducted in two bibliographic databases: Psicodoc and PsycINFO. These searches revealed 16 instruments that are widely used in Spain to that aim. These instruments were analyzed with respect to whether the content of their items were appropriate for measuring the symptoms of the DSM-IV and ICD10 definitions of depressive episode and dysthymia (relevance) and with respect to whether their items were proportional to the symptoms of those definitions (representativeness). Among the analyzed instruments, the following stood out: the full versions of the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-I, BDI-IA y BDI-II), the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), since their items showed a greater degree of relevance and representativeness of the content of the DSM-IV and ICD-10 symptomatic definitions of clinical depression.
