This article analyses the active labour market policies used by EU countries to try to combat unemployment, which has generally increased as a consequence of the economic crisis. The active policies respond to multiple interrelated purposes which together are aimed to achieve three objectives: to keep motivation for the unemployed to actively seek work, to reinforce their employability through training; and to create sustainable jobs. One of the main conclusions of this work is that there is no single employment policy as such; however there is a set of programs and recommendations which try to coordinate and organize the 28 employment policies of the respective member states. To help with this coordination, this work brings to the fore a compilation, classification and structuring of the active labour market policies pursued by each country, thereby highlighting those policies that can be considered best practices and that may serve as examples for the rest of Europe.
