Resum

Violence in intimate relationships is a frequent, heterogeneous, universal phenomenon, in which various biological, psychological, sociological and contextual variables influence, affecting all social strata, ages and both sexes. The present study analyzes the role played by the expressive and instrumental beliefs about the use of violence in the intimate relationship of the couple and the different strategies employed in the intimate partner relationship to resolve conflicts (CTS2, Straus, Hamby, Boney-McCoy and Sugarman, 1996). For this, 928 men and 969 women aged between 18 and 90 years were analyzed. The results reflected gender differences in beliefs about aggression and various tactics used to resolve conflicts. These data provide useful information for the design of intervention programs that include among their objectives the cognitive part of the aggression.
