Abstract

This work focuses on the study of aggression in juvenile offenders. The main objective was to verify whether their recidivism and adjustment to the juvenile detention center vary between different groups configured according to distinct patterns of aggression. Participants in this study included 184 young offenders, aged between 14 and 20 years, serving custodial sentences at one detention center in Madrid. The criminal history and breaches of the disciplinary regime in the initial period of detention were analyzed, and the Reactive-Proactive Aggression Questionnaire was applied. The results showed that Proactive Aggressive subjects presented a greater number of crimes and Low Aggression subjects presented a lower number of disciplinary files. Results are discussed pointing out the relevance of specifying the type of aggression in order to the application of treatment and violence risk assessment.
