Résumé

Introduction: Caries risk assessment is the identification of the probability of caries over a certain period of time, or the probability of a change in the size or activity of pre-existing lesions. Currently, advances in preventive and diagnostic techniques makes the diagnosis and treatment of caries as a disease possible, and those who are more likely to develop lesions (high risk) can be identified and, through preventive and therapeutic measures, the probability of contracting the disease changed (low risk). Material and methods: A literature search of articles published in the MEDLINE database was performed, using the search terms "caries risk assessment", "caries management" and "caries clinical protocols" with the "AND" operator. Results: Currently, by using these assessment models, the risk of caries can be determined by evaluating risk and the protective factors to which the individual is exposed. In addition to the clinical signs of disease, an assessment is made of the patient's medical history, which includes anamnesis, an examination and complementary tests. Conclusion: The assessment of a child's individual caries risk, and assigning the patient to a certain risk group, is fundamental if disease prevention and management strategies are to be implemented at an early age, and clinical decisions taken regarding the interval between monitoring visits.
