Resumen

Objective: The aim of this research is to understand how students’ self-concept affects their academic performance in Physical Education. It is approached from its academic, social, emotional, familiar and ethical perspectives. As a secondary objective, we analyze and compare the level of selfconcept taking into account the gender of students. Methodology: The sample consists of 131 students (75 male and 56 female) of Secondary School aged between 12 and 18. They answered the AF5, Auto - Forma5 concept of Garcia and Musitu (1995) questionnaire. Descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) were computed for the entire sample. In addition, Pearson´s correlation was also calculated in order to check its relationship with the educational achievement. We also used the Student´s t-test to learn about the differences between groups. Results: A positive relationship between self-concept and academic achievement in physical education (r=0,26; p<0,01), was confirmed and academic self-concept (r=0,72; p<0,01) and familiar self-concept (r=0,20; p<0,05) were found to be among the most significant. Regarding gender, although women and men have similar selfconcept´s levels (7,12 ± 1,1 and 6, 86 ± 1,0; p<0,01), men score higher than women in the emotional dimension (p<0,01). On the other hand, women score better in the academic dimension (p<0, 05). Conclusion: This study shows that those who value themselves most positively achieve better results.
