Abstract

Climate change mitigation, one of the main challenges of 21st century, requires the development of strategies towards a low carbon economy, where CO2 capture and valorization enables the reutilization of residual CO2 into the manufacture of added value products. Dimethyl carbonate (DMC), important building block in the chemical sector, has attracted much attention in the last decades, not only because it can act as a substitute of phosgene in polycarbonate synthesis but also because of its potential use as fuel additive. The high costs and environmental implications of the commercial DMC production technologies, restrict their use and encourage the development of alternative processes based on carbon reutilisation. In this context, the aim of this thesis is the study of the feasibility of the CO2 valorisation through the electrosynthesis of DMC and the assessment of the environmental sustainability of the process by means of life cycle assessment.
