Résumé
The ultimate objective of this thesis is to expand knowledge about the world of the guitars and guitar-makers of Granada. It is motivated by the activity of the author as luthier and researcher. The content is useful to museum curators, guitar-makers, organologists, and anyone interested in the history of the Spanish guitar. The first section undertakes a profound analysis of the bibliography, historiography and the history of the guitar and similar instruments. A series of techniques and interventions, many of them new, for the scientific study of cordophones exemplified in the guitar. Following this a biographical study of all the guitar-makers established in Granada prior to the twentieth century and those who were originally from Granada. This study analyses the socio-cultural framework of the time and how it affected this collective. One of the principal contributions is the high number of makers which were unknown until now. The main body of this thesis is a an exhaustive catalogue of existing Granada guitars showing the maximum information using photographs, descriptions, contributions to the history of the guitar, measurements and blueprints. The principal conclusion reached is the demonstration of the importance of the old Granada school of guitar-making due to its innovations, the quality of the instruments conserved and the influence on the work of guitar-maker of other schools.
