Abstract

Personal values are becoming a fundamental variable in order to explain and understand concern about environmental protecn. Working on a sample of 408 students of Castilla-La Mancha University, environmental concern is studied through the relationship among personal values, beliefs about consequences of environmental conditions and proenvironmental behavioral intentions. The resulting scores show that biospheric, altruistic and openness-to-change values, and also the biospheric and social-altruistic beliefs, are significantly related with proenvironmental behavioral intentions. With respect to gender, women show firmer intentions to adopt proenvironmental behaviors. Finally, a close correspondence between the sense of moral obligation and environmental concern was found.
