Abstract

The thesis is clear: the history and geography were born as social sciences in the nineteenth century, the century of the construction of nation-states. In that context, the history and geography became subjects for all citizens, because it served to build the national identity of each state, both in Spain and France and through the West. Such a character has marked the future of the teaching of geography and history. Therefore, they are subjects whose contents are causing political and social disputes. Today, however, these subjects can change their roots to become carriers of a new identity, a plural and intercultural identity which claim a tolerant and cosmopolitan citizenship in todays global society.
