Abstract

Carbohydrates and their derivatives have focused much attention in recent years as a source of chirality for the synthesis of chiral drugs and natural products, because of their variety, cheapness and synthetical affordability. In this context, this PhD Thesis describes new methodologies based on carbohydrate derivatives as chiral auxiliaries in reactions of interest because of the biological and/or synthetical importance of their products. We have studied the use of acyclic derivatives of glycals as well as butane-2,3-diacetals of glyceraldehyde as chiral auxiliaries in Pauson-Khand and Staudinger reactions, along with the synthesis of cyanohydrins, processes where the use of carbohydrates as chiral auxiliaries has been scarcely explored. Thus, the featured results constitute original solutions and a new concept of the use of carbohydrates in the aforementioned areas, describing a wide range of new enantiomerically pure compounds of potential interest.
