Abstract

Nowadays, multicultural societies, propose us new educational challenges to give answers to the needs for the students, which increasingly are more diverse and complex. The incorporation of immigrant students and the gypsy ethnic group, present in our region, is leading to the school to reflect on the actions that can be carried out to attend on the students, from the diversity of gender, ethnicity and culture. We consider that developing intercultural education as an educational proposal is the most viable option. Therefore, we have focused our interest in the intercultural teacher training from initial education, and in attitudes, strategies, intercultural skills and values, in order to break stereotypes and existing prejudices. In conclusion, we request to include intercultural education into the academic degree programs of the University of Extremadura and to imply to the public administrations and to the University so that they assume this commitment.
