Abstract

The concept of personal space was studied by many psychologists throughout the decades of the 60’s and the 70’s of the past century. The analysis focused on a physical space: an ‘invisible bubble’ that surrounds every person. Approaching this space usually generates defensive reactions like retraction or flight, but also aggressive attitudes. In fact, every person has other inner spaces –of intellectual or emotional value–, that treasures with certain affection. This investigation intents to deepen on the expansion of the concept of personal space and its role in three interpersonal communication scenarios: the willingness to expose one’s own personal space; the receptivity to the personal space of others; and the entrance into the personal space of others.
