Abstract

The objective of this article is to describe the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale (M-C SDS) and review its psychometric properties, especially concerning its most widely used Spanish adaptation, both in its original format and its brief version. The M-C SDS is one of the most widely used and validated instruments for measuring social desirability understood as response bias when responding to psychological assessment instruments. In this article, the construct of social desirability is examined and compared with other constructs related to lack of sincerity (e.g., self-deception, impression management, faking, dissimulation, malingering, feigning, defensiveness), the application, correction and interpretation of the MC SDS as a measure of social desirability are exaplained in detail, especially in the field of forensic and legal psychology, and the advantages and disadvantages of the use of the M-C SDS with that objective and in that context are discussed
