Resumo

Fossil remains can be composed of a great disparity of materials that present specific conservation problems. In addition, these remains can be partially or totally included in rocks of different lithology. The elimination of this matrix is usually needed in order to facilitate the access to the surface of fossils and to enable their study or to ensure their conservation. Access to fossil remains is done through reliable treatments that allow the removal of the matrix that encompasses them and that do not compromise the stability of specimens. The use of cleaning techniques based on the use of gelled solutions can be a useful for some of the treatments in which the use of traditional techniques can compromise the conservation of fossils.
