Resumo

Cities have nowadays become main touristy destinies as they are the highest example of the societies of the spectacle, where leisure and consumer activities can be found completely mixed. As a result, urban policies use tourism as a leading resource in order to regenerate and diversify the economic systems of the cities and the surrounding regions. Therefore, heritage and many activities with a touristy content are transformed, renovate, even, invented so that cities can compete with others, mainly in the global context. The role played by marketing in creating an urban identity is also highly remarkable. Nevertheless, misusing tourism can have very adverse outcomes, such as conflicts between local residents and tourists and the irreversible homogenization of urban landscapes.
