Abstract
The geological record of the alpine deformations in the interior of Iberia during the Cenozoic, indicates the presence of several paleo-stress fields. From the analysis of microstructural populations, several fields ("Pyrenean", "Betic", "Iberian"...) have been proposed, acting at different times. An alternative model is proposed here which, by means of a single N-S compression and a process of strain partitioning, would explain the appearance of local stress fields related to the movement imposed by the presence of previous macrostructures, both in the Iberian Chain and in the Catalan Coastal Ranges and in the Spanish-Portuguese Central System. The deformation is distributed between NE-SW and NW-SE strike-slip faults and thrusts to accommodate a general N-S shortening.
