Abstract

Climate variability and changes in the frequency of extremes events have a direct impact on crop yield and damages. Climate anomalies projections at monthly and anual timescales allow for adapting a cropping system to take advantages of favorable conditions or reduce the effect of adverse conditions. The objective of this work is to identify the climate variability patterns affecting the summer cropping systems of certain places of the Iberian Peninsula, in an attempt of relating yield variability to climate variability. Simulated yield was obtained with CERES-maize crop model, included in DSSAT v.4.5 platform. Preliminary results indicate the influence of the El Niño phenomenon, of great value in predicting the crop yield. This work establishes a new methodology that could be also useful for climate change impact assessment where combined natural and forced variability represent a hazard for agricultural production.
