Abstract

Truancy is a problem that certainly affects the entire school community because each student who does not attend his/her school, is left out of collective cultural environment that exists within each educational institution and that helps students to develop the necessary skills face their future laboral and social life. A high percentage of students involved in this research belong to sectors of medium and high economic, social and cultural vulnerability and it is in the school environment where they acquire the cultural capital they need to break the cycle of poverty. This study pretended to find the causes of absenteeism on young students enrolled in first and second year of Secondary Public Schools in Public Schools in the city of Valdivia, to categorize internal and external factors that underlie the phenomenon of absenteeism.
