Abstract

The emergence of "cultural scenes" and their significance for contemporary cities is receiving increasing attention in the urban studies field. This multidimensional phenomenon is related to the innovation and creativity that arise from the mobilization of cultural resources and the interaction of the different actors and agents. As a result, not only physical space is transformed, new practices ‐ sometimes called "alternatives" ‐ also emerge in favor of a more inclusive and resilient city. This communication presents a first approximation to the case of Madrid, where cultural scenes, as in other European cities affected by the crisis, would be playing a significant role in their resilient response. We reflect on the concept and commenting on the methodological alternatives ‐ limited by the extreme of the phenomenon. In addition, it is presented an advance of localization patterns of Madrid’s artists based on Social Security records and other indirect sources, such as the review of the development history of the neighbourhoods and Madrid’s City Council policies or the fieldwork carried out. The results underline the interest of the neighbourhoods of Malasaña and Lavapiés, whose cultural scenes would be consolidated thanks to a remarkable historical trajectory and the creation of a marked identity, reinforced by its cultural agenda and the recent activity of diverse social movements.
