Abstract

One of the main changes in the recent history of the large cities is the gentrification processes, linked also to the world productive reconfiguration, both are putting urban areas as a main arena of the contemporary economy. In this sense, gentrification in city districts not only must be considered as a social change by means of the influx of more affluent residents, but also it must be related to the cultural economy where leisure and consumption have a main role in the transformations. In this context our work will develop some ideas about how some changes have happened in the Malasaña and Lavapiés Districts and their influence in the touristy offer. For instance, both districts, with different intensity and success, have undergone renewal actions driven by neoliberal policies. Besides, their active cultural dynamic has made them to be considered very important in the Strategic Tourism Plan of Madrid.
