Zusammenfassung

The objective of this study is to find out if there is a relationship between type of accident and injuries caused to affected people in traffic accidents. Type of accident will mean seat inside the vehicle, speed at the accident time, used of security devices, as well as weather conditions and road state. To get this, an epidemiologic study of traffic crashes is carried out, including every registered accident, with victims, attending Hospital La Fe in 2001, obteined from Accident and Emegrgency Department registre. For decesed victims, we include injuries detected during their postmortem study. Conclusions The average age is 35.56 years, and the mediana is 31 years. Males are more often, been casualty males 73.8% from the total. The ratio male/female among under 30¿s is 2.56, and it is 3.34 in those over 30¿s. The highest number of casualties occurs in local, provincial and free motorway roads (state highroads), during June, November and March, followed by summer months (July, Agost and September). Weekends have the highest number of victims, with nearly 20% per day (Saturday and Sunday). At 14:00 hours occurs the peak point of casualties. We did not find any relationship between speed and frequency of accidents causing victims. The commonest type of accident is by leaving the road. The state of the road did not make any differences, but human factor is the main responsable of accidents. More or less, 25 % of victims did not wear safety systems During the study period (2001) the number of victims (casualties attending A&E Department at Hospital La Fe) was 450. Among them, aproximately one thrid (31.11%) were decesses. The most serious injuries happened by runnig over, and head injuries are the most frequent lesion. Looking at the type of vehicle, motobikes and bikes obtain the gravest wounds.
