Resumo

Part One addresses theoretical and epistemological problems: the notion of melodrama in its diachronic dimension; melodramatic characterization based on a series of recognition structures -iconographic, spatial, actantial, narratives and musical; the study of melodrama as a genre; finally, we present an examination of David Wark Griffith’s place in the history of cinema and its traditional attachment to the "classical film". The Second Part consists of a study of the proposed corpus of films, with an examination of production, distribution and exhibition conditions in this period; profilmic and composition analysis; montage and spatial and temporal systems analysis; and narrator system where an analysis of music (CD has been produced for this Thesis, http://www.analisisfilmico.uji.es) in some David Wark Griffith’s films is included. Finally, we relate melodrama model with mythical thought and ritual seriality mechanisms in contemporary culture.
