Abstract
Lab assays on the sedimentation of some phytoplankton species from the hypertrophic lake El Porcal close to Madrid (Spain) were undertaken in order to find out the sedimentation rates of the following species: Oscillatoria lanceaeformis, O. limnetica (Cyanophyceae), Nitzschia acicularis, N. gracilis (Diatomophyceae) and Pteromonas angulosa (Chlorophyceae). Results greatly depended upon each species and its motion ability, blue-greens falling down slowest due to their flotation capabilities. In another assay with living algae O. lanceaeformis did not show a higher tendency to float in the light than in the dark. On the contrary Lyngbya sp. (Cyanophyceae) and Pteromonas angulosa appeared to sink more rapidly in light than in the dark, whilst O. limnetica showed the reverse trend. Living algae remained in suspension longer than dead algae.
