Résumé
During, the second half of the 19th century and the 1st of the 20th, a ring of industrial cities was built around Paris “hors de murs”, where factories and workers constituted what today has become a continuum with the capital. That image of a working and industrious suburb remained for more than a century, against that of the Paris of power and culture. In the 21st century, two major causes have created the need for a new image for that huge outer zone. On the one hand, the relocation of industries, has emptied the concept of “banlieue”; on the other hand, the rivalry of Paris with large international cities opting for the first “world cities”, have made essential to create a larger administrative entity encompassing the Ville de Paris and the cities of the first Crown: El Grand Paris. The Great Metropolis so structured needs to establish new contents, and to give a new image to that "extension" of Paris. Urban renewal and culture as drivers of this mutation are fundamental factors in the achievement of this new image
