Laburpena

Many surgical techniques were described during the 19th century, due to the quick development of science and technology and the introduction of general anesthesia. Among these new procedures, Billroth performed the first total laryngectomy in 1873 and although the burden of postoperative deaths and poor oncological results divided the medical community, it was shown that life without a larynx was possible and therefore, the technique was feasible. However, it was not until Glück´s modifications in the last decade of the 19th century that total laryngectomy was safe and effective. Partial surgery, and especially vertical laryngectomy did not have its actual value until the real indication was understood, for which the codification of St-Clair Thomson was of paramount importance. The description of supraglottic laryngectomy by J.M Alonso in 1947 brought the circle to an end, reaching a point in which functional and oncological results are not so different from those obtained nowadays.
