Abstract
Today, European cultural institutions are working on the digitization of a large number of collections to disseminate and let users access to the cultural heritage. In this line, identifying orphan works can be one of the possible results after implementing a digitization process; in other words, we refer to those all copyright holders who have not been identified or, even identified, have not been located. Consequently, the European Directive 2012/28/EU on certain permitted uses of orphan works may help Library and Information Science professionals face to digitization processes and approaches. To that end, this paper aims at analyzing the state-of-the-art of Spanish orphan works, identifying academic projects in the Library and Information Science field and presenting some challenges related to orphan works diligent search. Basically, a qualitative methodology based on professional experiences and scientific literature has been used.
