Ever since it was invented, Photography has been applied to research and teaching. The first aspect has been widely studied due to its applications in the fields of science, art and the communications media. However, the use of photos in teaching is an aspect which has barely been studied and its analysis allows us to discover its impact on the learning processes. The goal of this study is to review the first applications of photography to teaching, as well as its development, so that we can determine the methodologies used. In order to so, we have used as references the collections of the Universidad Complutense of Madrid and the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, and, in particular, those found in the Marqués de Valdecilla Historic Library, belonging to the Universidad Complutense, and in the Tomás Navarro Tomás Library of the CSIC.
