Resumo

The objetives of this study were to investigate the effects of a tannin dried extract from faba beans, with or without previous heat treatment or supplemental methionine, on thegrowth parameters of chicks and protein and starch digestibilities. Tannins from faba bean hulls were extracted with 70% aqueous acetone. Four dietary treatments were compared: Basal diet containing 67.5% Faba bean cotyledons, basal diet with 1.6% tannin extract, basal diet with 1.6% autoclaved tannin extract and basal diet with 1.6% tannin extract plus 0.3% supplemental methionine. The addition of the tannin extract to the diet reduced significantly chick weight, feed intake and feed efficiency, as well as protein digestibility; heat treatment neutralized in part the negative effects of tannins while methionine supplementation of the diet did not produce any beneficial effect. The presence of tannin in the diet had little influence on the digestion of starch
