The Ponferrada Castle is situated on a pre-Roman castro or hillfort village of the 1st Iron Age. The excavations that here we realized between 1996 and 2010 confirms some information that was disposable from 1980/1983. The size of this settlement was, as so long, one hectare in area, and from the cultural view belonging to the Soto de Medinilla group. Ceramic evidence suggests that this settlement was occupied from 7th century to 5th, and there are not archaeological evidences of the 2nd Iron Age. The human community who here lived built little circular huts, of about five or six metres of diameter, with mud-brick on stone bases and wooden roof. One of the most important data obtained in this settlement had been the finding of evidences of bronze metallurgy: a possible elemental bronze foundry has been found at the site denominated Área 11.
