Zusammenfassung

A revision of the hypotheses proposed to explain the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary extinctions (K/T mass extinction event) led us to conclude that the impact of an asteroid is the only cause that accounts for the environmental crisis and the known data. In contrast, the idea that the flood basalt volcanism in the Deccan area (India) was the main trigger of the biotic crisis still faces basic chronological and causal problems.
