Abstract

The touristification of urban centres is a long process. It began with the conversion of Spanish cities into visiting destinations and was fully consolidated in the final decade of the 20th century. The present moment is characterized by the intensification of the process, which has meant an increase in its most negative effects. However, a whole series of new aspects have also emerged, such as the emergence of tourist housing, the extension of the tourist footprint to other neighbourhoods of the city and a certain social response. As a result, there is a new cycle of touristification, which directly threatens the urban and heritage protection of the areas most affected by growing tourism pressure
