Abstract

This article examines the concept of labour force by way of an analytical strategy that consists of attribuiting individuals the properties of the groups they belong to in order to characterize their objective employment situation. It considers employability as the probability of being employed from a uniform working group. For this purpose a logit model is estimated for every family situation studied as a simulation instrument to calculate employability, and the results are applied to the comparison between unemployment andemployabiblity through the concept of labour pressure. As conclusions we observe the varying influences of the autonomous communities in every family position and the efficacy of employability in identifying different employment patterns between sons and daughters who are not studying, between new and traditional wives, and between husbands who are in stable employment and those forced into inactivity. Labour pressure underlines the differences between family positions in respect of the chances the unemployed have of finding work. Families in a bad employment situation cannot be used asa refuge due to the concentration of unfavourable situations in their members.
