Abstract

Coping skills in drug dependents with different degrees of family support were assessed in this study. A total of one hundred and eighty six subjects who were abusers of alcohol, hashish, cocaine, amphetamines, heroin, methadone, hallucinogens, and medication, and non abusers were included in this study. Groups were derived based on consumption versus non consumption and degree of family support from parents (father and mother, father only, mother only and no support). Measures related to coping, severity of drug and alcohol use, and socio-demographic characteristics of the subjects were analyzed. Results revealed differences in the coping strategies used by drug and alcohol users and non users. The coping strategies used were found to be related to the degree of parental support.
