Abstract

Though the historiographical references about the cult of Sol Invictus in Caracalla times are very rare, we definitely know for sure that there was a very well developed cult to this god, a cult in which the emperor himself was involved, due in part to his own choice, as well as to a family tradition. Sol Invictus became one of the most widely known and expanded gods within Caracalla's reign, but this emperor did not pretend (as did Heliogabalo later) to make an exclusive cult out of it.
