Abstract

Defining social and emotional competence has not been easy for psychologist. Multiple criteria can be used to evaluate to what extent children and adults behave competently. Formal education is not devoted to teaching children such competences. In general, efforts are very poor or completely absent from the school curriculum. The results of classic intervention programmes based on learning specific techniques show that generalisation to natural contexts is limited, and that duration of positive effects over time is very short. There are, nevertheless, other kinds of interventions based on philosophy that by inviting children to think in a critical way, promote deep and long lasting effects. Our proposal defends a school curriculum focused on the improvement of these competences between 3 and 6 years of age. We suggest programmes based on Philosophy for Children, but offering also concrete behavioural, cognitive and interaction patterns.
