“The present contains nothing more than the post, and what is found in the efiect was already in the cause.” (Henri Bergson). Surely when the French Noble Prize reflected this, he was not referring precisely to the state of the contents that our museums harbour. Nevertheless, extrapolated in this context, Bergson’s musing serves as a perfect illustration of what we intend to address in this article. We examine: the evolution of the value and use of textile pieces collected in military museums; the effect that this development generates into their preservation; their current state and their future forecast. We study the causes and the elements which alter their condition, causing deterioration which, in many cases, could be irreversible. This effect not only distorts the quality of textile collections, but will also impact directly on their historic, symbolic and representative value.
