Urban planning and land use law have an important role in the maintenance of public security and crime prevention. In the following pages we seek to offer a first foroy into what is a broad and complex subject. Firstly, the article reviews theoretical developments arising from several disciplines that come together in the treatment of the subject. Secondly, the instruments from different theoretical approaches which have been adopted in the practical implementation of the environmental crime prevention are described. Thirdly, the impact that this question is having on legal systems and public policy of countries and supranational institutions in our region is studied. Finally, we will concentrate on the analysis of the subject from the legal perspective and from the point of view of public policies within the framework of the Spanish legal system.
