Resumen

Our main object is to offer a broad view of the rehabilitation process of historic centers, mainly from a social approach. We will start from a conceptual analysis in order to define our subject, describing its historical evolution (phases and forms). Epistemologically, we will point out the historical, aesthetical, and urbanistic relativity of any rehabilitation activity, and how it is manifested in Spain. With this objective in mind, we will situate the rehabilitation process within the urban network, being aware of its inherent social conflictity. We see the rehabilitation of historic centers as a social necessity, as it becomes an instrument to deal with different group interests and the spatial reproduction of the space. Methodologically, we propose the IAP method as a participatory praxis. We describe, specitically, the deletorious effects of the modernization on the social network. The IAP method can be used to integrate the civil society, the political power, and the technocratic groups. Finally, we propose a set of specific actions, synthesized on the necesity of: 1) participatory urban planning; 2) a institutional and interdisciplinary cooperation; and 3) a local development approach. The last goal is to promote a social welfare, related to the preservation of our historic heritage in solidarity with the future generations.
