Abstract

Psychic trauma is one of the most widely used, debated and questioned concepts by psychotherapy specialists over the last few decades. The term has many different meanings that stem from a variety of considerations including the theoretical approach used to address the psychic trauma and the therapeutic model we work with. Is psychic trauma the main cause of mental illness? or, is there a link between underlying neurobiological bases and the predisposition to overcome or not a psychic trauma? Our Daily Clinical practice shows that many people who have experienced extremely adverse and life-threatening situations suffer from traumas that paralyze their daily life. In contrast, other people in similar circumstances are capable to develop life plans successfully. We don´t have a clear answer for it yet. The issue raised here intends to shed some light on the matter and to start both a discussion and a reflection on the importance of these aspects through the analysis of the psychotherapeutic intervention of the aforementioned case.
