Abstract

In the 19th century there was a great interest in folklore in all its manifestations, such as stories, songs, riddles and proverbs and sayings. An example of this interest is Cecilia Böhl de Faber y Ruiz de Larrea, better known by the pseudonym Fernán Caballero. In her works, the novels of customs sown with a variety of popular elements (sayings, stories, jokes, beliefs, expressions, proverbs) used by the people in the 19th, stand out, unlike the aristocracy, who tend to use neologisms and gallicisms. The proverbs inserted in her works do not come from dictionaries or proverb collections, but from informers, since Fernán Caballero, impressed by the richness of Andalusian folklore, dedicated herself to collecting these samples of popular wisdom, along with other elements of the Andalusian heritage. She is therefore not only considered a writer, but also a folklorist. This work aims to analyse the proverbs collected by Fernán Caballero.
