Abstract
This article looks at both the relevance and the design and management complexity of secure storage areas for an institution such as the Prado Museum, which currently has close to eighty-five percent of its collection in repositories. To this end, the quantity and type of these assets are analysed, with a focus on the space required and how these storage areas have evolved with regard to size, the facilities and the equipment required. Finally, a section is dedicated to the importance of documenting and tracking the procedures that have been put into place to deal with the key risks, with a clear understanding, on the part of the museum, of the effectiveness of global conservation plans for the preservation of collections in storage.
