Abstract

This paper studies various works of theatre and performance art in which the act of walking is used as a fundamental artistic material. Employing a theoretical framework taken from the works of Henri Lefebvre (1968), Michel de Certau (1984) and Nicolas Bourriaud (2002), the article begins with an analysis of Esther Ferrer's Se hace camino al andar (2007, 2014) and then analyses a selection of recent shows, such as the itinerant productions of the Galician troupe Chévere (2017) and Storywalker, a project launched from the Kubik Fabrik theatre by Fernando Sánchez-Cabezudo (2014). Through these and other examples, the paper delves into ambulatory theatre which, as will be shown, can be linked with a long and illustrious tradition of peripatetic artists and thinkers, a tradition in which we can locate the Romantic “pedestrians” (Wordsworth, Coleridge, Hazlitt…), Henry David Thoreau, practitioners of the situationist dérive, and, more recently, writers such as the Barcelonan Enrique Vila-Matas.
