Resumo

Hamas, the first Sunni Islamist movement to win a free and democratic election in the Near East, is a political reality that cannot be ignored in any political agreement relating to Palestine. Simultaneously a social, religious and political organization, Hamas is a controversial factor that has been labelled as terrorist, Palestinian nationalist fighting against Israeli occupation, and even as Israel’s involuntary ally. This article examines the movement in its multiple and changing context, with an emphasis in the years following its 2006 electoral triumph.
