Resum

This paper aims at analyzing the relationship between the internal R&D investments and technological results (patents) of Spanish companies, considering whether the investment source is public or private within a context of austerity policies and financial crisis. We used approximation with panel data procedures —1345 companies and five years (from 2008 to 2012)— from the PITEC database. The results show that the investment of public and private resources in internal R&D has a positive impact on the technological results (patents) of Spanish companies. This result greatly depends on the size of the companies and their capability for generating their own investment resources for internal R&D. As a result of this analysis, it is suggested that greater public support is needed to improve the endeavors of Spanish SMEs.
