Abstract

The Walls of Ávila are one of the most outstanding examples of medieval urban fortification, whose exceptional value, state of conservation and high symbolic content have been decisive for its World Heritage declaration. The Master Plan has been drafted following the guidelines of the National Defensive Architecture Plan, with the aim of grouping and expanding knowledge, in order to plan its conservation properly. The effectiveness of this heritage management instrument has been corroborated recently by the important findings obtained in the archaeological research recommended by the Plan. A large interdisciplinary team has participated in its writing. It has studied and ordered the large amount of existing information on the walls; has analysed and has made the diagnosis of the current state; and, finally, has prepared plans and proposals that are the basis for its conservation programme.
