Resum

Based on data obtained from conversations with Ecuadorians residing in Madrid, we discuss to which extent interaction in a shared language can have a negative or positive effect on the interaction itself and can determine the intercultural space between the speakers. The data show that there is a reaction of the Ecuadorians to the negative categorization elaborated by the Spaniards and the differences related to the power associated with it, so that the Ecuadorians tend to construct a cultural identity much more distanced from Spanish culture than is actually the case. It seems, therefore, that sharing a common language is not sufficient for intercultural communication to take place.
