Abstract

Exploratory research on the educational role of the public library in the context of the information society. It brings considerations of information literacy initiatives in public libraries in Brazil. The goal of the research is successful experiences of ALFIN in Brazil, especially in public libraries in order to emphasize the educational role of the public library in the information society. Understanding information literacy as a learning process that promotes learning to learn and understand concepts, attitudes and skills of the individual in relation to the search for information, making it able to understand the need for information, evaluate the information and applies it to solve problems throughout life. The paper aims to highlight the potential and importance of the role of public libraries in this sense. The results show that in Brazil, compared to other countries such as Australia, Canada, Spain, the United States and England, the information literacy initiatives are still very timid, however, we identified significant and meaningful experiences ALFIN in Brazilian public libraries.
