Abstract

In this paper the new trends in food packaging design and materials are reported. Plastics are the most demanding materials for the food packaging industry due to the number of advantages such as lightness, low cost, easeability of tuning their properties, design and dimensions required for the product. Active and intelligent food packaging are the new generation of materials for the food packaging industry. The emerging technologies take advantages from the interactions between the plastic material and the food to design food packaging that not only contain and protect foodstuff, but also interact with food product extending their shelf-life or giving information to the consumers about the food quality. Another tendency in the food packaging industry is the development of more sustainable packaging from plastics based on renewable resources and/or with biodegradable characteristics
