Résumé

Most specialists who have studied the defensive system of Puerto Rico have focused their attention on those constructed by Alejandro O'Reilly after his arrival in 1765. Yet the passage of the Power Law in 1811 prompted new construction of commercial ports and associated coastal batteries at strategic points along the coast. These defenses followed the models developed in the Military Architectural Treaties of the 19th Century, as opposed to the existing bastioned defenses. By the 19th century, sources located in national and foreign archives confirmed that the islands defenses had deteriorated due to a result of the lack of investment in their preservation and restoration.
